SUMMARY:Larissa Strunowa — The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:With a vigorous brush stroke\, Larissa Strunowa paints without taboos or prejudices human bodies working with transparencies and contrasting colors. Using only the basic principles of body representation – the contour and color – the artist evokes the nude without showing it completely and detaches itself from the purely realistic representation. The mysterious universe of her works\, both disturbing and fascinating\, gives to voluptuous silhouettes a captivating aura. Due to the sculptural appearance of the bodies\, the magnified postures and the chosen environment\, some works plunge us into scenes inspired by reinvented legends and mythologies. The works of Larissa Strunowa are all facets of her mind. It is rare to be able to perceive with such clarity the profound thoughts of an artist; Perhaps it is possible because Larissa is a full-fledged\, uncensored and unstated soul.

SUMMARY:Stephan Balkenhol
DESCRIPTION:For his new exhibition at Nosbaum Reding Gallery\, German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol presents a series of recent works made in his trademark woodcarving technique. \n\n\n\nIt was during his studies at the Hamburg School of Fine Arts in the late 1970s that Balkenhol developed a sculptural practice in reaction to the minimalist and conceptual trends of the time. Noting a kind of absence in these avant-garde movements\, he decided to devote himself to figuration in a bid to reconnect with\, and renew\, a long tradition of classic sculpture. \n\n\n\nHis works\, which seem to be inspired in particular by medieval polychrome sculpture\, depict human figures with anonymous features\, carved with hammer and chisel from a single bloc of wood (poplar or wawa)\, whose imperfections and veins are left visible. Standing on plinths with which they seem to merge\, they are contemporary but timeless characters whose expression is simultaneously hesitant and confident. As archetypes oscillating between the prosaic and the sacred\, their indecisiveness puzzles viewers while opening up a wealth of narrative possibilities. \n\n\n\nStephan Balkenhol was born in 1957 in Fritzlar (Hesse). He lives and works in Meisenthal (France) and in Kassel (Germany). His works can be found in numerous public and private collections worldwide\, including Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden – Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, DC; Art Institute of Chicago; Hamburger Bahnhof\, Berlin; Kunstmuseum Bonn; Museum of Grenoble; National Museum of Art\, Osaka; and Peggy Guggenheim Collection\, Venice. The personal exhibition Stephan Balkenhol meets Old Masters – Window in Time is currently on show at the Museum of Wiesbaden (Germany). He is also known for his works in public space\, among others at Blackfriars Bridge in London\, at the entrance to the Hamburg Zoo\, at Städel in Frankfurt\, and in Kassel and Leipzig. He has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe since 1992.

SUMMARY:Lib Shkupolli
DESCRIPTION:Lib Shkupolli\, known as Lib\, is an artist whose current work delves into the complexities of identity\, masculinity\, and the human form. Raised in Luxembourg but with roots in Kosovo\, Lib’s artistic journey has been shaped by his cultural heritage and his experiences navigating our society. \n\n\n\nLib’s artistic journey is a tapestry of experiences\, each thread contributing to the rich texture of his work. From his early days studying fine arts in Berlin to his later pursuits in socio-education in Liège\, Lib’s path has been marked by a quest for self-discovery and a commitment to exploring the human condition through art. His return to Luxembourg a decade ago marked a homecoming of sorts\, yet it also signaled a new chapter in his creative evolution. Balancing his role as an „éducateur gradué“ with his passion for art\, Lib found inspiration in the intersection of these seemingly disparate worlds\, recognizing the inherent connections between education and artistic expression\, allowing a symbiotic relationship between the two. \n\n\n\nIn his intimate home studio\, nestled in the depths of his basement\, Lib’s creative vision comes to life. It is here\, amidst the comforting hum of his surroundings\, that he channels his experiences\, thoughts\, and observations into tangible form. Inspired by nature and flowers\, the series of vases created during the tumultuous era of the pandemic served as a starting point for Lib’s creative process\, capturing both the fragility and resilience of the human spirit. Infused with bold colors and organic shapes\, these vases carry a weightiness in their rounded forms inviting viewers to pause\, reflect\, and find solace in their beauty. With their sand-like material and voluminous appearance however\, they project a sense of strength and robustness. \n\n\n\nMoving forward\, Lib aims to explore this exact fluidity and heaviness of form\, particularly focusing on the male body and its relationship to masculinity. Through his new creations\, he seeks to challenge stereotypes and invites viewers to reconsider preconceived notions of strength and vulnerability and to question the narratives that shape our understanding of identity. \n\n\n\nHis works\, displayed at Creutz(&)Friends\, serve as catalysts for dialogue\, encouraging conversations about identity\, representation\, and the intersections of social body perception and art. Lib’s creations are not just aesthetically striking but also thought-provoking\, offering a fresh perspective on the complexities of the human experience. \n\n\n\nAbout YLA — Young Luxembourgish Artists\n\n\n\nThe original idea of YLA (Young Luxembourgish Artists) is based on the loose artist group ‘Young British Artists’\, which was founded in London\, UK\, in 1988 with artists such as Tracey Emin\, Damien Hirst\, JennySaville\, Cornelia Parker\, Sarah Lucas\, Gary Hume\, Tacity Dean\,… The majority of these artists studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College of Art\, London UK. They became known for their shock tactics and their opennessto experiment with different materials and media. Their exhibition ‘Sensation’ received much attention and was widely discussed in the press. \n\n\n\nYLA was founded in 2021 because we felt the need to give a platform to young artists from Luxembourg. The first exhibition was a big project with 12 artists\, exhibited in two separate spaces. After the exhibition wedecided to set up a non-profit association called YLA – Young Luxembourgish Artists. We continue organizing exhibitions under that association and act as a guide for the artists along their career. This year’s groupexhibition presents the work of 9 artists. \n\n\n\nThe majority of the artists that we show in the framework of YLA have completed studies in Fine Arts or Visual Arts. All of them have been born between the 1980s and 1990s. These artists are by no means a collective of artists\, and should not represent a canon in art\, but rather present different perspectives and express themselves freely through different media. They deal with current issues and ask questions. Most of these artists have had few or no exhibitions in Luxembourg but a few exhibitions abroad. The exhibitions weorganize are always curated and selected by us. \n\n\n\nThe artists we select for YLA have completed their studies abroad\, due to the lack of art schools in their own country. This is by no means a criticism\, however\, as studying abroad broadens horizons and opens up newpathways. Thus\, we think it’s important to give these artists visibility in the country they were born in or grewup in. \n\n\n\nWe are happy to provide a base at the beginning of their career and to show their talent to a large audience. \n\n\n\nYLA was founded by Lou PHILIPPS and Gerard VALERIUS from Valerius Gallery.

SUMMARY:Trixi Weis – Invisibles
DESCRIPTION:Born in Luxembourg in 1967. Lives and works in Luxembourg. \n\n\n\nThrough numerous artistic practices and a great diversity of materials\, Trixi Weis creates works\, each telling a story. Even though the artist rejects working in series\, her work reveals certain common threads such as fairy tales at the beginning of her career or ephemeral in-situ installations in natural environments. Other creations that use food as subject and material are interactive. Trixi Weis often stages herself in performances\, videos\, and small kinetic sculptures\, on themes of solitude\, celebrations\, love\, and sexuality. She regularly creates scenographies for theater and dance. More recently\, she has been creating monumental sculptures\, notably for public buildings. All her works\, even those addressing more serious subjects and criticizing our society\, almost always integrate a note of humor\, making Trixi “…a mischievous artist\, gently subversive.”

SUMMARY:Hermann Reimer – 'Interior' Intermission
DESCRIPTION:Hermann Reimer (* 1959\, Münster\, Germany) lives and works in Berlin. Initially\, Reimer studied physics\, before dedicating himself to art studies at the “Universität der Künste in Berlin” in 1985. The artist focuses on interior and urban exterior spaces\, often blurring the boundaries between the two. His depictions of hotels\, vacation apartments\, living rooms\, and landscapes often feature stage-like interiors devoid of people or with solitary figures\, separated by abstract elements. His paintings are characterized by sections where depicted objects and people seem to dissolve\, blurring the line between foreground and background. Reimer’s compositions\, while comprised of familiar elements\, alienate the viewer\, preventing them from finding rest.
